There is always so much to tell about a city, that is why I separate my articles into 3 very useful parts:
Part 1: Top Places to See in Budapest
Part 2: Best Places to Eat in Budapest
Part 3: Transport and Accommodation in Budapest
Where to eat?
First things first, I have to say that the food in Budapest is amazing! The city is booming with cool, modern places to eat and you can find any cuisine or food you want. If you are vegan or vegetarian you will be especially happy, as hummus seems to be the best selling dish in the city 🙂 In this list I collected my favourite places to eat in Budapest.
1. Dobrumba
Dobrumba is a mix of Mediterranean and Middle East dishes. On their menu you will find a lot of dips, hummus, couscous and tajine. I would really recommend ordering the Mezze selection of 5 dips and sharing with a company. We were a company of 5, and had barely finished the starters as the portions are big and the food is amazing! I would recommend booking this place in advance as it gets very full in the evenings.
2. Vegan Garden
This is the first ever street food market that I visited which was entirely vegan. Here you can find burgers, nachos, mexican food, ice cream, desserts and even a chimney cake. There are a lot of tables in the middle, so you can sit down and enjoy your food. The place is great if you want to try out plant based food as the food is delicious. There is also a bar, so you can grab a bier too 🙂
3. For Sale Pub
If you are looking for something traditional, and can’t wait to goulash (traditional Hungarian meat stew), then head to the For Sale Pub. Everyone from my friends claims that they cook the best goulash in Budapest there. You might need to wait a little bit to get seated, but the food is worth it. The portions are huge, so be careful to not order too much 🙂
4. Langos at Retró Lángos Büfé
This is a really small spot to grab some traditional Hungarian bread (Langos) for take away. The bread is usually fried in oil and topped with sour cream and onions, but you can choose from many different topics. The portions are huge and very affordable (around 3 €), and they are one of the best Langos in Budapest that we’ve tried.

5. Hummus Bar
As I mentioned earlier, Hummus seems to be the locals favourite in Budapest, and you can find it on every corner. For my lunch I always went to the Hummus bar and grabbed a Pita with falafel and hummus. There are so many variations of hummus, so everyone can find something that they like. Moreover the prices are very reasonable and you can get lunch for around 5€. Oh, and if you show your student ID, you can get an extra 10% discount!
6. Street Food Karavan
This is a great place to walk around with friends and grab a few dishes from different street food stalls. We enjoyed original dishes such as Langos burger, which is made from traditional Hungarian fried bread.
More Budapest restaurants that were recommended by my local friend, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to try them all:
7. Mazel Tov
Mazel Tov has a similar menu mix to Dobruma, with tasty Mediterranean and middle East offers. The interior is also very cute, especially in summer when you can enjoy their open garden.
8. High Note Sky bar
For a restaurant with a nice drink selection and nice view over the city head do High Note Sky bar (must reserve in advance). Make sure to charge your phone to make some pretty pictures for your instagram 🙂
9. La Fabbrica/ Akademia Italia Budapest
If you fancy some Italian cuisine you can visit one of these two restaurants, which were highly recommended to us by locals, but we didn’t have enough time to visit them all. So there is a reason to return to Budapest 🙂
🍰Best Bakeries & Coffee in Budapest 🇭🇺
If you love coffee and desserts then you will for sure love Budapest, as there are here nearly on every corner. Here is my top favourite list:
@cake_shop_budapest – cheesecakes, brownies and coffee
@vinylandwood – great two floor cafe with wooden, organic things to buy inside
@chazdodomacaroons – amazing macaroons made in front of you
@gerbeaud_cafe – historical cake shop in a beautiful building
@plantmilkyway – vegan desserts
Tips:
1. Mineral water
One of the biggest confusions I had when visiting Budapest is how to get water without gas. Funnily, I quickly ended up helping other tourists in supermarkets as well. Most of the labels on bottles are colour coded:
- Pink label = no gas
- Green label = medium gas
- Dark Blue label = highly carbonated
2. Book your restaurants
If you want to visit one of the popular restaurants I would highly recommend booking in advance, especially if you are eating dinner on the weekends. Normally it is very easy to call or text most of the places and they speak English.
